Typically enough, Indian movies are directly associated with Bollywood movies. Since India is a hugely diverse country and that have gave birth to many regional film industries. These regional industries serve the audience better and one of such minorities are English movies made in India. English movies in India is also typically boxed as Hollywood but here are some English movie which tells stories of India and by Indian directors just the language is English to cater a wider audience.
Here is the list of 10 best English speaking Indian films:
1. Amu
Directed by Shonali Bose, who also made ‘Margherita with a Straw’, the movie stars Konkona Sharma in the lead. The backdrop of the film is set on the 1984 anti-Sikh riots and a story where Amu discovers who was her parents.
2. Jhankar Beats
We all are familiar with the songs of ‘Jhankaar Beats’ like ‘Tu hi dil hai’ and ‘Suno naa’ but not much is talked about this movie. This is an Indian Bollywood musical comedy film directed by Sujoy Ghosh, yes the director of ‘Kahaani’. The film stars Juhi Chawla, Sanjay Suri, Rahul Bose, Shayan Munshi, Rinke Khanna and Riya Sen. This is a breath of fresh air.
3. Hyderabad Blues
Directed by Nagesh Kukunoor, the movie starts with an NRI comes to visit back home in Hyderabad and the boy finds it strange in his own land.
4. Parzania
Parzania co-written and directed by Rahul Dholakia, the film is set in the Gujarat communal riots of 2003. Inspired by the true story of a ten year old Parsi boy who disappeared after the massacre where 69 people were killed.
5. 36 Chowringhee Lane
A film written and directed by Aparna Sen is a 1981 film which went on to win the National Award that year for Best Direction. The film is produced by Shahshi Kapoor and stars Jennifer Kendal along with Dhritiman Chatterjee and Debashree Roy.
6. A Death In The Gunj
This 2016 Indian drama is a highly under-rated one and everyone who loves to watch a thrilling drama with great cast and performance, this is it. The film has an ensemble cast of Vikrant Massey, Tillotama Shome, Om Puri, Tanuja, Gulshan Devaiah, Kalki Koechlin, Jim Sarbh and Ranvir Shorey.
7. Kamasura: A Tale Of Love
Co-written, co-produced and directed by Mira Nair, this Indian English language movie is surely a piece of art. The title of the film being and based on ancient Indian text, the Kama Sutra speaks about love and lust in the most beautiful way possible.
8. Ship Of Theseus
Another gem of the recent times, this movie is infamous for its philosophy heavy content and actually not everyone’s cup of tea. Directed by Anand Gandhi and produced by Kiran Rao, the movie has three stories which have a very undertone link. In case you love to delve deep into the meaning of life and the philosophies, this is where you should invest your time.
9. Water
Directed by Deepa Mehta, this is the last part of Mehta’s Earth trilogy. The screenplay of the movie is by Anurag Kashyap which explores the lives of widows in Varanasi, India. The movie stars Seema Biswas, Lisa Ray, John Abraham, and Sarala Kariyawasam in pivotal roles.
